Why Chikankari Needs Special Care
Chikankari is a delicate hand embroidery art form that has been perfected over centuries in Lucknow. The intricate threadwork, fine stitches, and lightweight fabrics require gentle handling to maintain their beauty and longevity.
Step-by-Step Hand Wash Guide
Step 1: Check the Fabric First
Before washing, identify your fabric type. Cotton chikankari can handle slightly more water pressure, while georgette and muslin are more delicate.
Step 2: Use Cold Water Only
Always use cold or lukewarm water — never hot water. Hot water can cause the fabric to shrink and the embroidery threads to loosen.
Step 3: Choose a Mild Detergent
Use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent or a detergent specifically made for delicate fabrics. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners.
Step 4: Soak Briefly
Soak the garment in cold water with detergent for no more than 10–15 minutes.
Step 5: Gentle Hand Wash
Gently swish the garment through the water. Do not scrub, rub, or wring the fabric — especially near the embroidered areas.
Step 6: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse with clean cold water until all detergent is removed.
Step 7: Remove Excess Water Gently
Never wring or twist chikankari fabric. Instead, gently press the garment between your palms to remove excess water.
Drying Tips
- Always dry in shade — direct sunlight fades the fabric colour
- Dry flat when possible to maintain the garment's shape
- Never use a tumble dryer
Ironing Tips
- Always iron on the reverse side of the fabric
- Use a low heat setting
- Never iron directly over embroidered areas
Storage Tips
- Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth
- Keep away from direct sunlight
- Add neem leaves or cedar balls to prevent moth damage
